The history of Cherry Diesel

Timeline

1. 1991The breeder Chemdog begins growing and spreading Chemdawg; SeedFinder’s genealogy traces Sour Diesel, and through it Turbo Diesel, back to this line.^3,6
2. Early 1990sSour Diesel becomes popular, according to Leafly.⁵ MTG Seeds later used it in Turbo Diesel, one of Cherry Diesel’s parents.⁴
3. Early 1990s–1996OG Kush is first cultivated in Florida and reaches Los Angeles in 1996, per Leafly.⁷ MTG Seeds’ listings place OG Kush in both of Cherry Diesel’s parents.^8,9
4. 1996MTG Seeds’ own profile dates its work with medical cannabis farms and dispensaries in California to this year.²
5. Jun 2019The earliest Cherry Diesel flower result in our state lab dataset.¹⁰
6. 2021The busiest year in our lab data, with 56 of the 149 matched tests; across all years, Michigan supplies 107.¹⁰
7. Oct 2023The latest Cherry Diesel flower result in our state lab dataset.¹⁰
8. Oct 2026Weedmaps’ strain page describes MTG Seeds’ limited-edition Cherry Diesel as discontinued, while MTG Seeds’ own website still lists it among its seeds.^1,11
9. Oct 4, 2026Weedmaps menus list Cherry Diesel flower at 15 stores in 4 of 27 markets; look-alike names such as Lemon Cherry Diesel are not counted.¹²

Why it stayed small

MTG Seeds’ Cherry Diesel has only been offered as regular seed, according to SeedFinder, and Weedmaps calls it a limited edition that is now discontinued.^3,11 Its lab record is narrow too: Michigan supplies 107 of our 149 matched tests, and none come from California, where MTG Seeds is based.^1,10

Other strains now carry longer names that contain Cherry Diesel: Weedmaps lists Lemon Cherry Diesel under three different crosses and Sour Cherry Diesel as Atlas Seeds’ Sour Diesel × Cherry Pie.^13,14 Our Weedmaps counts leave these longer names out (see where to find it).¹²

The disputed parts of the story

• Which Cherry OG: MTG Seeds’ own Cherry O.G., according to SeedFinder; Leafly’s genetics section links a Cherry OG credited to Emerald Triangle Seeds, while its description links Cherry Kush (see genetics).^8,15,16
• Still available: Weedmaps calls MTG Seeds’ limited-edition Cherry Diesel discontinued, but MTG Seeds’ website lists it among its seeds.^1,11
• Royal Cherry Diesel: Weedmaps gives it the same parents and says it may be a phenotype selection or a naming variation; Leafly lists it as a separate strain.^17,18
• When: no source we opened gives a release year; the earliest matched result in our lab dataset dates from Jun 2019.¹⁰
