Genetics

Is Cherry Diesel indica or sativa? Its genetics and family tree

Cherry Diesel is a balanced hybrid, listed by AllBud as 50% indica and 50% sativa, that MTG Seeds bred from Cherry OG and Turbo Diesel.1,2,3 Sources agree on that pairing but point to different Cherry OGs, and several other strains carry longer names that contain Cherry Diesel.4,5,6,7

Parents as reported by Leafly, Weedmaps, AllBud and SeedFinder (which Cherry OG is disputed); offspring as listed by SeedFinder.1,2,3,5,8,9

The two parents

Cherry OG: SeedFinder lists the parent as MTG Seeds’ own Cherry O.G., which the breeder describes as a plant with a classic OG structure and a sweeter finish, bred from Purple Afghan–OG Kush × OG Kush–Cherry Bomb, with a heavy yield and an 8.5–9.5-week flowering time.3,5 Leafly’s Cherry OG page lists Cherry Diesel among its children.4

Turbo Diesel: MTG Seeds calls it an extremely high-yielding, fast-growing version of its Sour Kush, bred from Sour Kush × Sour Diesel and flowering in 10 weeks, and lists that Sour Kush as probably Sour Diesel × OG Kush.9,10 SeedFinder counts 13 direct descendants of MTG’s Turbo Diesel, among them Cherry Diesel, Dragon Berry, Durban Turbo, Orange Turbo and Prezidential Kush.9 Leafly’s Turbo Diesel page lists no parents.11

Which Cherry OG? Three accounts

Every source names Cherry OG and Turbo Diesel as the parents, but they point to different Cherry OGs.1,2,3,8

MTG Seeds’ recipe and Leafly’s Cherry Kush share Purple Afghan (Afghani) and OG Kush; Leafly’s Cherry OG page credits a different breeder.4,5,12

How balanced is it?

The labels agree on a hybrid. AllBud calls Cherry Diesel a rare evenly balanced hybrid, 50% indica and 50% sativa; Leafly calls it well balanced; Weedmaps lists it as a hybrid; and SeedFinder files MTG Seeds’ version as indica/sativa.1,2,3,8 Reported effects lean one way, though: Leafly users rate it mostly energizing, and AllBud describes lifted, energizing effects.1,2

Regular seeds, a feminized line and an F2

MTG Seeds’ Cherry Diesel is a regular-seed line: SeedFinder says it has never been available as feminized seed.3 Weedmaps calls the release a limited edition that is now discontinued, while MTG Seeds’ website still lists Cherry Diesel among its seeds.8,13

SeedFinder lists a second Cherry Diesel, from ApeOrigin, sold only as feminized seed and bred by crossing MTG Seeds’ Cherry Diesel with itself; ApeOrigin also calls it Cherry Turbo Diesel.3,14,15 Our lab records include 3 results labelled as a Cherry Diesel F2, a second-generation version, which our strict matching keeps out of the figures.16

Royal, Lemon, Sour, Dark: other names with Cherry Diesel in them

Menus and databases use the words Cherry Diesel inside other strains’ names.6,7,17 Our lab figures count only products labelled plain Cherry Diesel and leave these out.16
